Venus, the second planet in the solar system, makes an almost perfectly round orbit around the sun due to the fact that the difference between the nearest and farthest point from the Sun is only 1 600 000 kilometers and it takes 224 Earth days to complete. The rotation of Venus is so slow that is takes 243 Earth days to complete a full revolution. However, what is absolutely incredible is that Venus rotates in the opposite direction from all the other planets. This "retrograde" rotation is very hard to explain. Current theories, that scientists have developed about the origin and possible evolution of the solar system, describe only how and why all planets should rotate in the same direction, but they cannot explain such a strange behavior. Some plausible explanations are that there was an impact between Venus and another large, celestial body or, that there is a complex system of gravitational phenomena. In any case, no one knows enough about our neighbor to be reasonably certain. Whatever the cause of this catastrophic event, it certainly occurred in the remote past, prior to the solidification of the planet and the creation of its atmospheric blanket, when the solar system was still very young.
